Highlighted project of the Week: Cincinnati Automation Benchtop Dimensional Gaging System

Cincinnati Automation previously built a full line of benchtop inspection units for a customer to check the width and length of a very small and specific product for the healthcare industry. This machine is used in a clean room and is operator loaded to inspect for dimensional features. In November 2017, after Cincinnati Automation had supplied 7 identical Benchtop units, the customer requested to turn these machines into standalone units with table tops and bottom view cameras. The system was redesigned from the original to the unit pictured above with the following specifications.

The inspection system now includes two 5MP Keyence color cameras and an XG controller. It also incorporated a foot pedal trigger and specialty machined and coated metal inspection surface plate for handling the parts. The bottom camera is now housed below inside a protective shroud and is looking up through a custom designed glass disc. The parts are only a few millimeters long and half a millimeter wide, so a very specialize set of small field-of-view, macro lens’ were used to increase the resolution to about .0022mm/pixel. Similar systems could be redesigned again with even higher resolution using 21MP cameras.
